Microwave permittivity of dry sand

چکیده

The complex, relative dielectric permittivity " of dry desert sand, collected at the Grand Erg Oriental in Ksar Ghilane, Tunisia, in October 1994, was measured with microwave resonators at frequencies between 0.245 and 6 GHz. The results are presented here. Whereas the real part "0 is nearly independent of frequency, a monotonous decrease of the imaginary part "00 with increasing frequency is observed. The data can be fitted to a Debye relaxation spectrum with a relaxation frequency of about 0.27 GHz, leading to a nearly frequency-independent penetration depth of about 1 m over the range from 1–10 GHz. The spectrum can be explained by Maxwell–Wagner losses of semiconducting spheres embedded in a nonconducting sand medium.

Epsimu, a Tool for Dielectric Properties Measurement of Porous Media: Application in Wet Granular Materials Characterization

The principal aim of this article is the presentation of EpsiMu, a tool for dielectric properties measurement. This general tool can be used to characterize all types of materials, but in this article we apply it to porous or granular materials. The tool consists of a coaxial cell and dedicated software that allow us to reconstruct the permittivity in almost real-time by a de-embedding process....

Dielectric mixing model for the estimation of complex permittivity of wet soils at C and X band microwave frequencies

A dielectric mixing model has been developed to calculate the complex permittivity of wet soils at 5.65 GHz (C-band) and 9.5 GHz (X-band) microwave frequencies. The model considers the complex permittivity of dry soil as initial parameter. The complex permittivity of wet soil has been estimated in terms of the complex permittivity of dry soil, the complex permittivity of water at a given microw...

Globally convergent and adaptive finite element methods in imaging of buried objects from experimental backscattering radar measurements

We consider a two-stage numerical procedure for imaging of objects buried in dry sand using timedependent backscattering experimental radar measurements. These measurements are generated by a single point source of electric pulses and are collected using a microwave scattering facility which was built at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Our imaging problem is formulated as the inv...

Two-port transmission line technique for dielectric property characterization of polymer electrolyte membranes.

Performance improvements of perfluorosulfonic acid membranes, such as Nafion and Flemion, underline a need for dielectric characterization of these materials toward a quantitative understanding of the dynamics of water molecules and protons within the membranes. In this Article, a two-port transmission line technique for measuring the complex permittivity spectra of polymeric electrolytes in th...
